Specialist Dentist Jobs
A General Dental Practitioner (GDP) will often refer dental patients with more complex cases to a dentist that specialises in a specific branch of dentistry. This ensures their patient receives the most optimum dental care specific to their case.
Zest Dental recruit within six specialist areas of dentistry: Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry (Paedodontics), Periodontics and Prosthodontics.
Orthodontists specialise in the straightening of crooked and misaligned teeth, via ongoing dental patient treatment and the application of dental braces.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons have expertise in issues surrounding the mouths and jaws.
Paediatric Dentists specialise in preventative dentistry, oral health care and oral education for children.
Periodontists specialise in the treatment of gum disease.
Prosthodontists specialise in providing treatment to patients that have lost adult teeth. They utilise dental treatment including, crowns, implants and dentures.
Endodontists specialise in treating dental patients with infected pulp in the inner tooth, using root canal treatment.
Qualifications Required:
A dentist that provides treatment in a specialist area of dentistry will already have undertaken a Bachelor Degree in Dentistry and be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC). The clinician may then undertake a practice role providing general dental treatment, building up their confidence and skills in patient care. It is usual that during their early career a dentist will become interested in expanding their knowledge and expertise in a specific field of dental treatment and work towards, via postgraduate education, a specialist dental qualification. It is also common for recent dental graduates to continue immediately from graduation and undertake a specialist dental qualification. Following the successful completion of a specialist dentist qualification the dentist can then apply to be registered with the GDC within their chosen expert field of dentistry. For the vast majority of Zest Dental's specialist dental jobs, candidates must be registered with the GDC as a specialist dentist.
In terms of career prospects the specialist dentist may continue to provide treatment within general practice, work within or open a specialist dental practice taking referrals from general dental practitioners. The specialist dentist may also wish to work within a hospital environment or indeed pursue a career in academia within a dental school.
